HBO has confirmed they are returning to the seemingly endless well of stories that is the Game of Thrones universe with a new spin-off series in the works.

Francesca Orsi, head of drama series and films at HBO, recently confirmed the news to Deadline when talking about HBO’s upcoming slate of productions. “We have other spin-offs that we’re working on right now, one of which… is very promising, and it is still the Targaryen line,” she said.

Successful spin-offs

House Targaryen is the focus of the first spin-off from Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon. This is set at a time when the family had united the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros under one ruler. House of the Dragon has already enjoyed two successful seasons and season three is currently in production.

Another GoT spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is set to hit our screens late this year. This series is based on the novella The Hedge Knight, written by George RR Martin.

Martin has already seen an early cut of the six-episode series and in a blog post was effusive in his praise for it. “I loved them,” he wrote. “Dunk and Egg have always been favourites of mine, and the actors we found to portray them are just incredible.”

More Game of Thrones spin-offs

As Orsi hinted, there could be more GoT spin-offs in addition to these. She added: “There’s a number of other spin-offs, we can’t really guarantee what’s going to go forward.”

This has been hinted at before. Back in August last year, Martin told the Oxford Writers’ House that seven GoT spin-offs are being developed, of which four are animated and three are live action. This is in addition to House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

There could also be a movie set in the Game of Thrones universe too. In November 2024, The Hollywood Reporter, citing numerous sources, said that Warner Bros is in the early stages of developing a Game of Thrones movie. It was at such an early stage that currently there is no writer, director or cast attached to it.

As Orsi said, it cannot be guaranteed that all of these will ever progress beyond a storyboard, but it does seem that fans will be kept in stories about the GoT universe for years to come.
