It has been confirmed that a sequel to hit horror film Five Nights at Freddy’s is in the works – and it could be released to coincide with Halloween this year.

In a recent interview with Variety, Josh Hutcherson – who starred as the unfortunate security guard Mike Schmidt – said that a story is being written and production is aiming to start soon, and that he is keen to reprise his role.

The Five Nights at Freddy’s film centred on security guard Mike, who takes a job watching an abandoned entertainment center, but finds that the four animatronic mascots come to life and kill anyone still on the premises after midnight. Horror then ensues.

Five Nights at Freddy’s, which was based on the popular horror video game franchise, was a surprise hit last year. The Universal/Blumhouse production was filmed for a measly $20 million, but grossed $300 million worldwide when it was released at the cinema and on streaming service Peacock. While reviews were mixed – it has a 31% score on Rotten Tomatoes – it seems that it was popular with movie-goers, especially Gen Z, who have grown up with the game, and with such box office success, a sequel was perhaps inevitable.

Other rumours suggest producers are looking for a quick turnaround on production and to have the film ready to go for Halloween – when else? – this year.
