For the first time since his divorce from Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck is speaking out. He says there was “no scandal” that led to the end of their marriage.
Bennifer attracted the public’s attention when they rekindled their romance in April 2021. The two previously dated from 2002 to 2004 and were engaged, but called off their engagement due to media attention. For ten years, Lopez was married to singer Marc Anthony from 2004 to 2014, and from 2005 to 2018, Affleck was married to actress Jennifer Garner.

The couple became the subject of split rumors in May 2024, but it wasn’t until August that Lopez filed for divorce. The split was not shocking to the public, as the couple were often spotted out looking tense and not together.
Consequently, Lopez spoke to Nikki Glaser as part of Interview magazine about her divorce. “That doesn’t mean it didn’t almost take me out for good. It almost did. But now, on the other side of it, I think to myself, ‘F***, that is exactly what I needed. Thank you, god. I’m sorry it took me so long. I’m sorry that you had to do this to me so many times. I should have learned it two or three times ago,” Lopez recalled about her divorce experience.

What did Ben Affleck say about his divorce from Jennifer Lopez?
Affleck was the cover star for GQ‘s April issue, and he spoke about his divorce and unpacked other things. On starring in the documentary about their marriage, he said he did it because it was an “interesting examination”. The 52-year-old also acknowledged differences between the two in handling fame. He praised Lopez and said she “handled celebrity more adeptly and adroitly than I have”. Of Lopez, he also expressed that he has nothing but respect for her.
On one of their differences, Affleck acknowledged the two had different attitudes toward handling fame. “As happens in relationships, you don’t always have the same attitude towards these things,” The Accountant star said.
“And so I thought, Oh, this is interesting because how do you reconcile that? Because … I love and support this person. I believe in them. They’re great. I want people to see that.”
He denied that the documentary the couple starred in about their relationship, The Greatest Love Story Never Told, had any impact on their marriage.
Why did they divorce?
There doesn’t seem to be a big story, at least according to Affleck. Speaking about why their marriage broke down, he said: “There’s no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue. The truth is, when you talk to somebody, ‘Hey, what happened?’ Well, there is no, ‘This is what happened.’ “
“It’s just a story about people trying to figure out their lives and relationships in ways that we all sort of normally do,” Affleck added.
Why the couple divorced appears to be because of personal differences, no cheating or scandals, as Affleck said.
