Glen Powell may be representing his home state of Texas on the big screen in the bloodiest, darkest manner possible soon. And he could be coming face-to-mask with one of horror’s most infamous icons in the process.

Deadline are reporting this week that Verve – the agency that represents the rights to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre – are shopping the rights to the 50-year-old slasher franchise around Hollywood.

The series, created by English filmmaker Tobe Hooper and screenwriter Kim Henkel in 1974, has undergone numerous reimaginings and reboots over the past 20 years, and could be set for another one in the near future.

How does Glen Powell fit into the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Reboot?

Deadline’s report states that one of the interested parties in Massacre’s IP is JT Mollner, the filmmaker best known for 2023’s critically acclaimed cult thriller Strange Darling. Alongside producer Roy Lee, Mollner is riding high off the back of the 96% certified fresh Darling and is now believed to be aiming his momentum in the direction of Muerto County, Texas.

Should Mollner and Lee be successful in reviving the Sawyer family and subsequently get a script together, it is expected that Powell – fresh off his own monster successes with Hit Man and Twisters, last year – will at least want to have a read of it.

In the much nearer future, however, Powell is starring in upcoming Hulu series Chad Powers and will be leading the line alongside Margaret Qualley in John Patton Ford’s Huntington, this year. In addition to these two major roles, the 36-year-old will be taking on the mantle of Ben Richards, originally played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, in Edgar Wright’s revival of dystopian action classic The Running Man.

Who Else is Interested in acquiring the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Rights?

Lionsgate and A24 are both being credited with an interest in the blood soaked franchise. Neon are also predicted to be tempted towards throwing their hat in the ring too, following the success of Longlegs and The Monkey.

A Verve representative told Deadline, “Verve represents The Texas Chainsaw Massacreestate and is building out a multimedia strategy for the seminal horror franchise.

“Verve has not officially submitted the property into any filmmakers, producers or buyers. Because this is such a hot and iconic horror property, packages are pre-emptively being brought to Verve.”

The last reimagining of TCM came in 2022, directed by David Blue Garcia for Netflix. However, while it generated tens of millions of viewership hours for the streaming service, the film was critically panned.
