Alec Baldwin and his controversial film Rust have been thrust back into the spotlight as the trailer has just been released. The Western film was filmed in 2021 but ended in tragedy. Baldwin discharged a gun being used as a prop. As a result, he accidentally killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza. The film had premiered at the Polish film festival Camerimage in November 2024.

A wrongful death lawsuit was filed against Baldwin by Hutchins’ family. In October 2022, Hutchins’ family and Baldwin settled out of court. Despite the settlement, the incident has caused bad press for Rust. Furthermore, in January 2023, the Santa Fe District Attorney (where the incident happened) said Baldwin would be charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter.

However, in April 2023, the criminal charges against him were dropped. The case was due to come up again, but again, the judge in the case upheld the ruling to keep the charges dropped.

The reactions to the Rust trailer were overwhelmingly negative, considering the circumstances.

Negative reactions to Rust

One user doubted the accidental claims of the incident and said, “…a prop gun fired…” All by itself, I suppose.”

Another responded to the post with the words, “Justice for Halyna!!!!”

One user asked, “Why would you release this movie still?”

Good question. At the very least, it is a PR nightmare.

A user echoed a similar sentiment, expressing their surprise that 20th Century Studios and TSG were still releasing the project. The user said, “Wow. Actually surprised that they’re still going ahead with it.”

Blasting Alec Baldwin

One user had very strong words to say about the actor. In response to a post about the trailer for the film, they said, “From shooting on set to shooting on screen. Hollywood’s selective moral outrage continues while they lecture us about gun control. Baldwin should focus on safety protocols instead of political grandstanding”.

Rust: A PR nightmare?

Yet another user said releasing the film was disastrous, not because of Baldwin but because it is a “PR nightmare” for theatres.

Still like Alec Baldwin?

On Baldwin, one user simply said, “I like Alec Baldwin. I hope it goes well for him.”
