Garfield played Spider-Man in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
A short time later, he reprised the role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Tom Holland’s current Peter Parker.

Earlier this week, Marvel confirmed a batch of names for its upcoming Avengers two-parter yet many fans noticed that not a single Spider-Man was among its starry cast.
Also missing was Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk/Bruce Banner, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Dr Strange, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Unsurprisingly, It didn’t take long for the MCU obsessed to head to Reddit to propose an idea as to why this might be.

This new fan theory not only suggests a way for these missing names to return – but for them to be part of The Russo Brothers’ new story in an unexpected way.
Avengers: Doomsday Reddit theory

Before we delve into this wild Reddit fan theory, remember to take it with a pinch of salt. After all, none of it has been made official by anyone at Marvel.
Over on the r/MarvelStudios Reddit thread, one user has suggested that perhaps many of the names missing from this week’s cast list are set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday after all. The twist? They’re on Robert Downey Jr.’s team Doom and not actually Avengers at all.
“Everyone’s losing it over the Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal—no Spider-Men (Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire), no Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), no Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), no Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), no Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch),” posted a user named Nawinks.
“But what if they’re not absent… what if they’re just not on the Avengers’ side this time?”
Marvel has “pulled the exact same move,” with Andrew Garfield

The fan then continued to break their theory down into three interesting points. The first highlighted that Doctor Doom could possibly be a Tony Stark variant. “That opens so many doors,” said the Redditor. “Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and have deep emotional ties to Tony Stark. A variant Doom could exploit that.
The second brought in the MCU’s ongoing Multiverse fascination. “All except Hulk have firsthand experience with multiverse: Doom could convince them that the only way to save multiverse is by taking a new approach—his way,” continued the theory.
The final point looked at Marvel’s track record for misdirection, with the user stating that the studio “pulled the exact same move with Andrew and Tobey in No Way Home—no official announcement, zero trailers. And let’s be honest, the hype from that reveal carried the whole movie.”
Sounds intriguing although one person who commented on the theory raised a valid point.
“Announcing them wouldn’t spoil them being on “team Doom”” – very true.
As for whether any of this will actually come to pass, only time will tell.
