Chet Hanks has released a new music video featuring his A-list father, Tom Hanks, recreating iconic scenes from the 1994 classic Forrest Gump.

The music video is for Something Out West’s – the duo consisting of Chet and Drew Arthur – new song You Better Run. You can see where this is going.

“Run, Forrest, run!” is one of the film’s most iconic lines, spoken by young Jenny (Hanna Hall) as she urges a young Forrest (Michael Conner Humphreys) to run while he’s being chased. Forrest is being chased by bullies who are throwing rocks at him while he struggles to run with his leg braces.

Chet recreates the Forrest Gump scene, but this time, he’s the one running. Dressed in the same checked shirt and beige trousers his father wore in the Hollywood blockbuster, he’s seen running from a group of bullies in a red pick-up truck.

At several points in the video, Tom—who won the Best Actor Oscar for his role as Forrest—returns to the famous park bench. It’s a callback to one of the film’s most iconic scenes, which produced the line, “Life’s like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.”

However, there’s no box of chocolates this time. Instead, he sits looking unimpressed, while Chet sits animatedly next to him belting out the song’s lyrics.

The 34 year old Running Point actor sings, “You better run like the devil’s on your tail / Like you broke out of jail / Like a big storm’s comin’ / Run like a wild mustang / Like a bullet train / Let me tell you somethin’ / You’re running out of time on a tickin’ clock / She’ll be comin’ for you, there’s no time to walk / Run, run, run”.

Chet and bandmate Arthur also appear on a boat on the water. This could be a possible reference to when Forrest becomes a shrimp boat captain and takes Lieutenant Dan out to sea.

Internet reacts

Fans shared their thoughts on the newly dropped track and Tom’s surprise cameo in the comment section on YouTube.

Some were sceptical about pressing play on the video, but ultimately pleasantly surprised. @selfdiscardedkingofruin7291 commented “I got to be honest I was expecting some kind of generic nepotism kind of crap but I am pleasantly surprised I like this song cool”.

@MissSarah0127 picked up on the father/son resemblance, noting “He has the same running movements his dad did in the movie.  Really good song.”

Meanwhile, @jjacks87 joked “Plot twist, Tom Hanks was unaware of the music video. He thought Chet just wanted to meet him at this bench.”.

Others weren’t so impressed. @MrSdbmgarcia branded Chet a  “Goofball”. He added  “Can’t take anyone seriously with a name like Chet 😂😂especially if his dad is Tom Hank’s. Silver spoon 🥄”

@GilHibachi felt much the same, saying “This is the worst thing I’ve ever heard I hate watched the F outta that. Talent skips a generation”

Tom has previously defended Chet from accusations of nepotism, saying: “Look, this is a family business. This is what we’ve been doing forever. It’s what all of our kids grew up in.”

“If we were a plumbing supply business or if we ran the florist shop down the street, the whole family would be putting in time at some point, even if it was just inventory at the end of the year,” he added.
