- Eddington will star Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal and Emma Stone
- Film is described as a ‘comedy western’
- Will premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival

Eddington, the upcoming release from A24, directed by Ari Aster, is heading to Cannes. The ‘comedy western’ will debut at the historic French film festival, where it will compete for the prestigious Palme d’Or.
The picture will mark the second collaboration between Aster and Joaquin Phoenix. The pair first teamed together for 2023’s surrealist black comedy Beau Is Afraid.
A24 have released a couple of shots from the upcoming film. No trailer has arrived at the time of writing, however. Given the premiere is taking place at Cannes, which is next month, we probably won’t have to wait too much longer for it.
In the meantime, until audiences in the south of France determine how long of a standing applause to give the film, here’s everything we know about Eddington, so far.
What is the Plot of Eddington?
A24’s official synopsis of the film reads, “In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Phoenix) and mayor (Pedro Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico”. Given the time it is set, the COVID-19 pandemic could potentially feature heavily as part of the storyline. Although that has not been mentioned thus far.
Cast
As we’ve already mentioned, Joaquin Phoenix, fresh off the death of The Joker, will play the role of the small-town sheriff, while Pedro Pacal will play the mayor of Eddington. The rest of the cast is similarly star studded, with two time Academy Award winner Emma Stone, Austin Butler and Yellowstone’s Luke Grimes also on board.
Eddington Release Date
Eddington will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The prestigious French festival will take place between Tuesday, May 13 and Saturday May 24, 2025. A definitive date has not been locked down yet. Neither has a date for widespread theatrical release.
Trailer
A trailer has not been released yet. But given Eddington will be premiering in little over a month, it’s likely a teaser will be with us in the coming weeks.
Aster has previously directed Hereditary, Midsommar and Beau Is Afraid for A24. For Phoenix, Eddington will be his third film with A24. The Oscar winner has previously starred in C’mon, C’mon and Beau Is Afraid.
