The new Wuthering Heights movie has, so far, been met with nothing but controversy.

From the subject of Heathcliff’s ethnicity, to the ages of lead characters Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi (who, at 34 and 27, are supposed to be pass for teenagers Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff), it seems as though fans don’t have a good word to say about the latest adaptation.

Due to hit theaters in February 2026, the Emerald Fennell-directed offering finished shooting at the end of March this year.

And followers of the film are now outraged by the latest scandal to hit the movie – a very big wardrobe faux pas.

Fans slam the Wuthering Heights wardrobe department

In a leaked picture from the film set, Robbie can be seen standing by Elordi, and Hong Chau, who plays servant Nelly Dean.

Dressed in a black veil and large gold crucifix, the Barbie actor is clearly taking part in a funeral scene (and while we’re not sure whose, Catherine herself is only 18 or 19 at the time of her own death… but let’s not go into the age thing now).

And while Robbie did look stunning in an off the shoulder, black lace gown, fans were not happy by the wardrobe department’s choice, to say the least.

“SHOULDERS OUT??? IN THE 1800s???? WHOSE IDEA WAS THAT???,” wrote one. Another added, “What IS she wearing??? Don’t they have a historical consultant???”

Someone else went on, “How do I report crimes against classic literature?”, as a fourth chimed in, “Big ahh crucifix and off shoulders mourning dress combo is diabolical.”

Another continued, “Apart from period inaccuracy, she would have frozen to death in the Yorkshire moors in that getup.”

‘It wouldn’t have been the style!’

While most fans slammed the outfit, another begged them to “stop acting like you know more than experts and do your damn research”, and added a few pictures of dresses from the 1840s.

“The book was released in 1847. Like I said, I did my research,” he replied to one fan. “That’s why I specifically looked up outfits from the 1840s.”

But while the novel may have been published in 1847, the story actually takes place much earlier than that.

“Wuthering Heights takes place in the 1770s, just a reminder that Google is free,” another fan (correctly) replied.

Someone else pointed out, “It wouldn’t have been the style in the 1770s, let alone for a funeral.”

And another went on of the pictures he posted, “Those are ball gowns. You wouldn’t wear them every day, and surely not for a funeral.

“They would even wear veils and mourning could last years. Maybe they would wear something like this on the very last stages of mourning – not right on the funeral.”
