DreamWorks Animation has announced plans to take viewers to a Forgotten Island in its latest movie project that is set to hit theaters in September next year.
Unusually for Hollywood animated movies of late, Forgotten Island is a new original movie – not a sequel, prequel or forming part of an existing universe.
That said, Dreamworks has had success with new IP of late, such as last year’s The Wild Robot, its adaptation of Peter Brown’s book. That movie took more than $333 million at the global box office and was nominated for three Oscars.
Forgotten Island joins a strong list of upcoming movies for DreamWorks, which includes the live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon, which has received positive first reviews after it was shown at CinemaCon recently, Shrek 5 and The Bad Guys 2.

What is Forgotten Island about?
Forgotten Island has been described as a broad party comedy adventure that transports the film’s protagonists to a long-forgotten, magical island rooted in Philippine mythology, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, exact plot details are being kept under wraps for now.
Who is in Forgotten Island
As at the time of writing, no announcements on who will be voicing roles in Forgotten Island have been made. But as we get closer to the movie’s release date announcements will be made.
Who are the creative team behind it?
Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado are writing and directing Forgotten Island. The pair have worked together before, most notably on Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, the critically acclaimed sequel from the Shrek universe, which was released in 2022. They also both worked on The Croods 2, where Crawford directed and Mercado was head of story.
In addition, Mark Swift, who Crawford has worked with on various projects in the past, is producing Forgotten Island. The pair received Academy Award, BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for their work on Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
When is it out?
Forgotten Island is slated to hit theaters in the US on September 26, 2026. It is currently the only film set to come out that weekend. A Resident Evil film is set to come out the week before.
