A new Stranger Things film has just landed on Netflix. It takes viewers behind the scenes into the creation of the new stage show inspired by the show.
The film landed on to the streamer on 15 April 2025. It chronicles the ambitious creation of the new West End theatre production based on the Duffer Brothers’ hugely popular show.

While fans wait for season 5, this new film aims to scratch their Upside Down itch.
According to its official synopsis, viewers can “follow the cast and crew of ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’ as they race against time to prepare the ambitious, boundary-pushing stage show for its West End debut amid mounting fan and critic anticipation.”

Indeed, it’s nail-biting stuff. Throughout its 90-minute runtime, we find out first hand just how tense and pressurised it is to helm any kind of West End production, let alone one that’s linked to one of the most popular shows of recent years.
Stranger Things documentary: What is it about?
As explained by Netflix site Tudum, this new film chronicles the ups and downs experienced by the cast and crew of Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
It shows all of the the hard work they put into bringing this new story to life, leading all the way to its opening night on 14 December 2023 at London’s Phoenix Theatre.
A taster of what fans can expect from the movie was released in the documentary’s trailer, which can be watched above.
As Netflix continues, fans can “Step into the Upside Down with the production team and feel the rush as they race against time to prepare the ambitious, boundary-pushing stage show for its London debut amid mounting anticipation from fans and critics.”
What is the plot of the stage show?

The First Shadow is based on a new story created by show masterminds the Duffer Brothers.
It was co-written by Adolescence scribe Jack Thorne and Kate Trefry and is a prequel to the primary Stranger Things storyline set in 1950s Hawkins, Indiana.
Its official plot-line sheds more light on what audiences can expect from the show.
“Before the world turned upside down. Hawkins, 1959: a regular town with regular worries,” it reads.
“Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously, and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isn’t so easy … and the shadows of the past have a very long reach.”
The show is set to move to Broadway later in 2025.
