Everyone’s favourite supervillain turned good guy Gru is back in a fourth instalment of the ever-popular Despicable Me franchise, and this time he and his family have to go on the run from an escaped supervillain intent on revenge.
In this, the first Despicable Me film in seven years, we rejoin Gru and family – wife Lucy, adopted kids Margo, Edith and Agnes along with new addition, son Gru Jr, living a relatively quiet life. We say relatively – Gru is having problems bonding with his son, as well as juggling family life with his undercover work for the Anti-Villain League.
And of course, the Minions – who are always the real stars of these films – are back too, creating mayhem wherever they go, ‘trying’ to help Gru.
But Gru’s world is turned upside down when a supervillain, Maxime Le Mel, escapes from prison and, along with his femme fatale girlfriend, Valentina, is hellbent on gaining his revenge on Gru. This prompts Gru and his family – and the Minions – to go on the run.
The original voice cast are all back on board: Steve Carell as Gru, Kristen Wiig as Lucy, Miranda Cosgrove as Margo, and Steve Coogan as Silas Ramsbottom, the former director of the Anti-Villain League, having resigned in the previous film. Pierre Coffin again voices the Minions.
New additions to the cast are Will Ferrell as Maxime Le Mal, and Sofia Vergara as Valentina.
Despicable Me has become one of the biggest grossing animated franchises, raking in $3.7 billion over the years and spawning two hit Minions spin-off prequel films.
Despicable Me 4 will hit cinemas on July 3 in the US, and around the world shortly afterwards.
