The weather might be hot outside, but there are plenty of reasons to stay inside – possibly sat next to a fan or with the a/c turned up – in July as the various streaming services are once again releasing a raft of top quality new shows to binge on this month.

There is something for everyone coming out this month, from comedy to drama, with no shortage of period action too.

Here is what we are most excited to see this month.

Little House on the Prairie

The original series, which aired some 40 years ago, is a beloved classic, showing the wholesome adventures of a family in old-time America. But that show very much romanticised that time, and this new reimagining of the series, which drops on Netflix on July 9, does no such thing. The new series is much grittier and while it still has the family drama element, there is also more emphasis on how difficult survival was as the American West was established.

Lucky

This crime drama, adapted from Marissa Stapley’s novel of the same name, sees Anya Taylor-Joy come to the small screen to play Lucky Armstrong, a career criminal who has to pull off – as always – one last job. Lucky – not an advert for nominative determinism – soon sees the heist go wrong, and she has to go on the run, not just from the FBI but also the mob. She must use all her con artist skills to constantly stay one step ahead of those pursuing her. Watch on Apple TV+ from July 15.

The Hawk

Following the success of Happy Gilmore 2, Will Ferrell has decided to jump onto the comedy about golf bandwagon with the Hawk. In it, Will plays Lonnie ‘The Hawk’ Hawkins, the world’s top golfer – in 2004. Now, late in his career, his results, his body and those close to him would suggest he is long past his best. The Hawk, however, believes he is close to a great comeback that can win him another major. It’s Will Ferrell so expect him to do lots of Will Ferrell things, but with golf clubs. If you are a fan of Will Ferrell, then this will probably be a hoot. Drops on Netflix on July 16.

Elle

The much-anticipated prequel series to the 2001 movie Legally Blonde is now on Amazon Prime Video. This series focuses on Elle Woods in her high school years in the late 1990s. Lexi Minetree dons the pink dresses as Elle. In Los Angeles, she’s popular and fits right in. But when her family moves to Seattle – home of grunge music – she’s a fish out of water. Can her charm and effervescent spirit win over her new classmates?

Silo season 3

The third season of Silo – based on Hugh Howey’s book series – picks up the story of Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) and her mission to find out what is going on. Last season, she found that the giant underground cylinder she lives in with many others – as the air on the surface is believed to be toxic – is not the only one in existence. This raised plenty of questions – but her quest is hindered by memory loss.

In addition, this season features a thread flashing back to what happened centuries earlier at the beginning of the underground silo project. Streaming on Apple TV+ now.

The Westies

If organised crime drama is your thing, then The Westies, debuting on MGM+ on July 12, could be for you. Set in Hell’s Kitchen in the 1980s, it focuses on an Irish crime family, whose truce with the mafia is set to crack as they seek to profit from a huge construction project. Cue lots of external and internal power struggles, which tend to end in death and mayhem.
