Many of us will be heading to the theater during the holiday season, and if you want to avoid the usual Christmas fare, then psychological thriller The Housemaid could be up your street.

The movie sees a young woman, Millie – played by Sydney Sweeney – get the job as a live-in housemaid in an opulent New York mansion. Millie is maid for a wealthy couple, played by Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, and their daughter. However, it quickly becomes clear that all is not as it seems – is it ever? – and there is darkness lurking under the surface of the seemingly perfect couple.

This is the latest of a string of high-profile movies for Sydney who, over the past five years, has become one of the hottest acting properties in Hollywood. But how much do you know about Sydney Sweeney? Here are some facts you might not know.

She pitches to her parents her five-year plan to become an actor

Sydney was first drawn to acting after she auditioned to be an extra on an independent film that was shooting in the area where she lived.

After deciding she wanted to make it her career, she needed to convince her parents that it was a viable option. So, what did she do? She presented them with a five-year business plan to show how she planned to achieve her ambition and make a living from acting. It must have worked…

She is a talented athlete

When she was a girl in school, Sydney was active in various sports, including being on the teams for soccer, baseball, snow slalom skiing, as well as other sports such as wakeboarding.

Sydney also took up combat sports such as taekwondo and kickboxing – she says that she took up these sports to help manage her hyperactivity.

She was class valedictorian at school

It wasn’t just sports that Sydney excelled in during her school years – she was also an ace academically. Not only was she in clubs for robotics and mathematics, she was also the valedictorian in her graduating class at Brighton Hall School in Burbank, California. Sydney also briefly attended the University of California, but by then her acting career had taken off and she dropped out.

Her first role was in an iconic show

Sydney started acting while still a child, and her first on-screen role came with a bit-part in the then-huge series Heroes – one to look out for if you ever go back to binge-watch the series.

She also had supporting roles in other huge shows including Grey’s Anatomy and Pretty Little Liars.

Sydney writes journals on all her characters

Plenty of actors have ways that they like to get inside the characters they are playing to give them greater authenticity and Sydney does too. In her case, Sydney writes detailed journals – often running up to 100 pages – on each character she plays. In the journals are included all sorts of details, going right back to the character’s birth in some cases, and including the reason they sit a certain way, or look at a person a certain way, she revealed to Who What Wear.

Sydney added that this strategy helps her to become the character and be able to just live in the scenes she is in.

Sydney is a petrolhead

Sydney loves all things automotive, but especially classic cars.

But Sydney doesn’t just buy classic cars – he renovates them herself too. She has posted videos online of herself restoring her 1969 Ford Bronco – including changing the front-rear axle and changing the brakes from drum to disc – no easy task.

Sydney also owns a 1965 Ford Mustang and a 1956 Ford F100, the latter of which was given to her by her grandfather.
