The annual announcement of which movies have been nominated for the Oscars is always a highlight of the showbiz calendar. All those conencted with the industry anxiously await the announcement to see if they, or the movie they worked on, has been chosen by the Academy to be on the shortlist.
This year, the hype didnt disappoint as horror movie Sinners took 16 nominations – a new record for the Academy. The total beat the long-held record for most Oscar nominations by two. Of course, whether this record number of nominations is converted into wins remains to be seen when the ceremony takes place next month.
But which movies are the movies with most Oscar nominations? Here is the list – and there are some classics on there.
16 nominations – Sinners (2025)
Sinners is a horror movie produced, written, and directed by Ryan Coogler, and starring Michael B Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers. The movie, set in 1932, centres on the brothers’ return to their hometown in the Deep South, where their attempts to set up a bar are disrupted by a load of vampires. However, the story, performances and allegories within it make this movie rise above your average vampire flick.
14 nominations – All About Eve (1950)
All About Eve is a drama, written and directed by Joseph L Mankiewicz. It centres on the story of famous but ageing Broadway star Margo Channing (played by Bette Davis) and Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter), a young fan who works her way into Channing’s life, ultimately threatening Channing’s career and her personal relationships. The film is also notable as it includes as young Marilyn Monroe in one of her first screen roles.
14 nominations – Titanic (1997)
The epic drama, directed by James Cameron, mixed historical detail with a fictional romance, told a story about the real-life 1912 disaster where the Titanic hit and iceberg and sunk, was a huge hit on its release around the world. Its drama, and the doomed love story of Rose and Jack, made global stars of Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, who played the couple.
14 nominations – La La Land (2016)
The Oscars committee seems to like movies that involve the acting industry. La La Land is musical romantic comedy drama from 2016, written and directed by Damien Chazelle, stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as a struggling jazz pianist and an aspiring actress respectively who meet and fall in love while pursuing their dreams of fame and fortune in Los Angeles.
13 nominations – various
There is a glut of movies that have garnered 13 nominations from the Academy judges, and there are some all-time classics in this list. For instance, Gone With the Wind (1939) had the record for nominations back in the pre-WWII days. It was joined in 1953 by another classic, From Here to Eternity. In the 1960s, Mary Poppins and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf both joined the 13 nominations club.
There was then a run of nearly 30 years before another movie would get as many nominations. That run was ended by 1994’s Forrest Gump, which memorably starred Tom Hanks. This was followed in 1998 by Shakespeare in Love.
Into the new century and 2001’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring took 13 nominations, followed by Chicago a year later. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button took a lucky 13 in 2008.
In the 2010s, only The Shape of Water (2017) received 13 nominations. This was followed in 2024 by Emilia Perez.
In addition, One Battle After Another, another 2025 movie (and another starring Leonardo DiCaprio), has 13 nominations and will be vying with Sinners for supremacy on the night.
