Summer is in full swing but the movie industry is prepared and has plenty of offerings to tempt us into a darkened room for a couple of hours (and not just the promise of cold drinks and air-conditioned theaters).

This time of year is traditionally blockbuster season in Hollywood and this year is no different with some hugely anticipated movies featuring beloved Ips coming out this month, which should mean that the global box office will be ringing constantly with sales.

As usual, there is something for everyone, from family comedies to superheroes to epic action and horror. Here are the movies we are most excited to see.

Minions & Monsters

Everyone’s favourite yellow guys in dungarees return for their third solo movie outing. This time, the action doesn’t follow on from the previous movie – The Rise of Gru – but jumps back in time to the 1920s and the Golden Age of Cinema. This time, we find our anti-heroes in Hollywood and find themselves cast in a monster movie. However, there is a problem – a distinct lack of monsters. So, ever-helpful, the Minions seek to find or create their own, with predictably disastrous (and hilarious) results.

The Invite

This comedy promises plenty of witty dialogue among some toe-curling moments. The Invite is an English-language remake of Spanish movie The People Upstairs and sees a dinner party featuring two couples who’s relationships are about to be put to the test. Seth Rogen stars alongside Penelope Cruz.

Evil Dead Burn

This year has already been great for horror, with movies such as Backrooms becoming huge successes, and Evil Dead Burn could see the streak continue. This is the first entry into the Evil Dead franchise since 2023’s Evil Dead Rise, but this is a standalone sequel. This time round, a family reunites after the death of a loved one, but things quickly go awry when family members start turning into Deadites. Gore ensues. Evil Dead Burn drops on July 10.

Moana

Disney’s mission to make live-action version of its beloved animated films continues with one of its modern classics, Moana. As usual, the live action version is roughly a scene-by-scene remake just with real people rather than drawings, although we are promised some new music from Lin-Manuel Miranda. Bonus points as Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as Maui (you’re welcome) while newcomer Catherine Lagfa-aia takes on the role of Moana. This will doubtless be huge, especially among younger viewers. Moana drops on July 10.

The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan’s latest epic film takes on Homer’s Greek epic fantasy tale. The movie was filmed across multiple countries and boasts an all-star cast, including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway and more. Precious little has been given away about the content of the film – although anyone with a working knowledge of Homer will have a decent idea – but the initial trailers and reviews suggest it will be a treat. Out on July 10.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day

One of the most eagerly anticipated Marvel movies of recent years – if that isn’t damning with faint praise – drops on July 31 with the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Tom Holland returns as the webslinger, and the action picks up some time after the events of No Way Home, with Peter living a lonely life, but still being Spidey – mostly focusing on being a friendly neighbourhood version. However, something strange is happening to Peter – he seems to becoming increasingly spider-like. Can he find out what’s happening – and can he get back into MJ’s life?
