• Trailer features Joker and Harley Quinn, and a tagline ‘he’s not alone anymore’
  • Joker and Harley to create chaos once they are out of Arkham Asylum
  • Apparent confirmation the film will be a musical

The long-awaited first trailer for Joker: Folie a Deux has dropped, and teases at major plot points – including apparent confirmation that it will be a musical.

The voiceover from Joker/Arthur Fleck says: “We need music to make us whole, to balance the fractures within ourselves.”

The trailer opens up with Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) in Gotham City’s Arkham Asylum, spotted by a curious woman in a singing group – who turns out to be Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga), although she says in the trailer ‘I’m nobody’, but her fascination with Joker is clear: “I’ve never done anything with my life like you have,” she says, miming shooting herself in the head.

The connection is instant and mutual. “What’s changed Arthur?” Joker is asked. He replies: “I’ll tell you what’s changed: I’m not alone anymore.”

The pair quickly make plans to get out of the Asylum. Later in the trailer, it shows Joker free in the city, and plenty of explosions and chaos ensue. How he regains his freedom remains to be seen.

Another key feature is the appearance of Joker’s trademark make-up, as well as Harley’s.

One song included in the trailer is the 1965 classic ‘What the world needs now is love’ by Hal David and Burt Bacharach and recorded by Jackie DeShannon, with the characters dancing to the song in the style of a classic big show number.

What this means and how it fits into the film, which is directed by Todd Phillips, will only be found out when it hits theaters on October 4.

The original Joker film from 2019 grossed more than $1 billion at the box office, and its success has led to the sequel, which has a much bigger production budget this time around.
