Revivals of beloved comedy series are tricky things. While fans can love to see what their favourite characters are up to now, sometimes the new writing or characters can’t live up to the original and it palls in comparison to it.

Scrubs was one of the most beloved comedies of the past 25 years and seems to have pulled off the trick of reviving the series but without losing the laughs. Season one, which saw JD, Turk and the rest of the gang return, along with some fresh faces, received a positive response from fans old and new, and it is returning for a second season.

As the production ramps up, we are getting more information about the new series, including those joining the cast. For instance, Deadline broke the news that Saturday Night Live alumni Alum John Higgins has been added to the roster in a recurring role.

But what else is coming in season 2 of Scrubs? Here is everything we know.

Who is returning for Scrubs season 2?

The core trio of JD (Zach Braff), Turk (Donald Faison) and Elliot (Sarah Chalke) are all back, as are a group of the interns introduced in season 1, including Sam Tosh (Ava Bunn), who is being promoted to a series regular this time round.

Other interns returning include Asher (Jacob Dudman), Blake (David Gridley), Amara (Layla Mohammadi) and Dashana (Amanda Morrow).

Who is joining the cast for Season 2?

As mentioned, Alum John Higgins is joining in a major recurring role as Grant, the new chief resident, and it is envisioned that he will become a thorn in JD’s side, just as he once was for Dr Cox.

Also joining the cast for season 2 is Rachel Bilson, who appeared in the final episode of the first season as hospital visitor Charlie, who hit it off with JD.

Will we see more old favourites from the original series?

Yes. Long-term fans will also be glad to hear that Dr Perry Cox (John C McGinley) and Judy Reyes (Carla Espinosa) will also be popping up as recurring characters.

It is also possible that Dr Kelso may return. Dr Kelso was a regular in all nine seasons of the original but didn’t appear in season 1 of the continuation. Ken Jenkins, who plays Dr Kelso, is now 85, but Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence has hinted he will appear this time around.

Is The Janitor getting a bigger role in season 2?

The Janitor was JD’s nemesis throughout the original run of Scrubs, but only appeared in a couple of scenes in the final episode of the first season of the continuation series.

However, fans will be glad to know he will be back in a recurring role for season 2, no doubt causing havoc for JD.

What are the storylines for season 2?

The official season 2 logline for Scrubs says that JD, Turk and Elliot are now respected doctors at Sacred Hert and are looking to inspire the next generation, while balancing all of the usual ups and downs of working in a hospital. Together with characters new and old, they are navigating this next chapter with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way.

We also know that Dr Perry Cox is returning, although this time as patient rather than a senior doctor. In season 1, he was diagnosed with microscopic polyangiitis, a rare and serious autoimmune condition. His long-term partner, Jordan Sullivan, will also be returning.

When can we see Scrubs season 2?

The 10-episode season of Scrubs will be shown on ABC in the autumn – the exact date has yet to be confirmed – and stream the next day on Hulu.
