Role playing game Baldur’s Gate 3 took the coveted best game award at the prestigious Bafta Game Awards – one of five overall that the title won.

This was the 20th Bafta Games Awards, which celebrates the best of the games industry in the same way as the film and television equivalents do.

Baldur’s Gate 3, which is based on Dungeons & Dragons and was developed by Larian Studios, took four other gongs, including for narrative, music and performer in a supporting role – Andrew Wincott, who plays Raphael took that award. It also won the Player’s Choice Award, which is voted for by members of the public.

Nintendo’s evergreen Super Mario franchise took home two awards for Super Mario Bros Wonder – best family game and best multiplayer game.

Another big Nintendo game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom also won two awards, including technical achievement.

There were some surprises at the ceremony, with two big games from last year coming away almost empty-handed. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was nominated in nine categories, but only came away victorious in the Performer in a leading role category, with Nadji Jeter, who played Miles Morales, taking the award. Meanwhile, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, while nominated in six categories, missed out on an award.

The Larian Studios team were surprised by their success on the night. “I still can’t believe we’re standing here,” said Larian Studios’ boss Swen Vincke when the company won its fifth award.

“A lot of people put a lot of heart and soul into making Baldur’s Gate 3, so this is amazing – thank you Bafta, thank you everybody.”
