- Oscar-winning actress has used a stage name for many years
- Revealed in an interview that friends in the industry call her by her real name
- She had to change her name when she was making her first steps in the business as another actress has her name and two actors cannot have identical names

Two-times Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone has revealed that she would prefer to be known by her real name – Emily.
Stone has used a stage name since her early days in the business. She had to change her name to Emma when earning her SAG card as there was already another Emily Stone already registered with the union and its rules prevent two actors from having the same name to avoid any possible confusion.
However, Stone has now revealed that she prefers to be known by her given name, and that friends and those close to her in the industry already call her ‘Emily’ or ‘Em’.
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Stone said when people get to know her they call her Emily. She added that a couple of years ago she “freaked out” and said she just wanted people to call her Emily.
Nathan Fielder, her co-star in new film The Curse, prompted the question when her referred to her as Emily in the interview.
When asked if fans could greet her as Emily, she said: “That would be so nice. I would like to be Emily.”
As to why she took the name Emma when she had to take a stage name, it could stem from the fact that when she was a child she was a big fan of The Spice Girls, particularly Emma Bunton – also known as Baby Spice.
Many actors take on a stage name when they are making their way in the industry. Other famous names include Whoopi Goldberg, real name Caryn Johnson and Jamie Foxx – real name Eric Bishop.
