Edgar Wright, best known for directing the Three Flavours Cornetto films and Baby Driver, is said to be in talks to direct the upcoming remake of Barbarella, which has already cast Sydney Sweeney as the titular heroine.

Rumours

Deadline first reported that Wright is in the frame to direct, adding that mother-and-daughter team Jane Goldman and Honey Ross are being lined up to co-write the script.

Wright has been said to be interested in the project for some time, even meeting with Sweeney soon after the remake had been announced in October 2022. There were also reports back in November last year that Wright was in talks to direct.

Wright, who is known for his fast-paced visual style, has directed sci-fi before, notably with The World’s End, the final part of the Cornetto trilogy with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Goldman too has a history in sci-fi and action films, having written books on The X-Files and penned the script for films such as Kick-Ass.

Cult classic

The original Barbarella film starring Jane Fonda in the title role was released in 1968. While it wasn’t a bit commercial hit at the time, it has gone on to become a cult classic. In the film, Barbarella is a space traveller who must track down and stop the evil scientist Durand Durand.

As yet, there is no timeline on when the film might make it to screens. Both Sweeney and Wright are busy on other projects currently, but, with the news of the talks, it brings the film a step closer to being made.

Recently, Sweeney hit back at criticism from a Hollywood producer, standing her ground in the industry. Additionally, Scarlett Johansson is in talks to lead a “Jurassic Park” reboot, adding more excitement to upcoming film projects.
