It’s been hard being a Stranger Things fan over the past couple of years, with little new content to enjoy. But now there are some crumbs of comfort – Netflix has released the first images of the fifth and final season, which are sure to get tongues wagging.

First look

On X – the website formerly known as Twitter – the official Stranger Things account posted a picture of Jonathan Byers and Nancy Wheeler (played by Charlie Heaton and Natalia Dyer respectively) sitting in the back of Steve Harrington’s BMW. The shot was credited to Ross Duffer, one of the showrunning Duffer siblings.

Both characters looked shocked at what they are seeing – but what could it be? Whatever it is, it is sure to get the online sleuths into gear.

Other images released show some behind-the-scenes shots of the Duffer brothers with the actors on set.

Ross Duffer also noted the pictures are from weeks 15-19 of filming, so they are evidently still in the thick of production. Star Millie Bobby Brown has said previously that production will go on until the back end of the year.

Long wait

The long-awaited fifth and final season of Stranger Things has had a protracted genesis. It is nearly two years since the dramatic conclusion of season four, with the introduction of Vecna, was released on Netflix. Later in 2022, it was announced that the scripts for the final season had been written, but production was then severely impacted by the Hollywood writers’ strike last year.

Netflix still hasn’t confirmed when it plans to release the final season, but it is looking likely that it will be sometime in 2025 if production wraps up later this year. So we will have to wait for some time yet to return to the Upside Down.
