- A podcast interview featuring Ariana Grande went viral this week
- Rather than the singer and actor’s usual high-pitched voice, she can be heard speaking in much deeper tones
- Grande commented on a viral clip of the chat to clear up why her voice had changed

She’s the pop princess who burst onto our screens in 2009.
But this week, fans were surprised to see another side to Ariana Grande’s personality – or, rather, her voice.
The Dangerous Woman singer, who turns 30 this week, appeared on the Podcrushed podcast, alongside hosts Penn Badgely, Nava Kavelin, and Sophie Ansari.
But rather than the usual higher-pitched tones we’ve grown accustomed to over the years, Grande’s voice slipped down a notch and was much deeper.
While the initial change wasn’t too noticeable, the star quickly seemed to realize – and reverted to her ‘usual’ voice in the next sentence.
The clip has gone viral on social media, with many baffled by Grande’s sudden change of key.
“This voice change is sending me,” one Twitter/X user wrote. “Regular Ariana was coming out for a second.”
He added, “She’s really the Paris Hilton of the music industry ‘cause most people don’t know that this deep voice is her real voice. Mama stay in that high voice.”
Another continued, “Me when I have to use my customer service voice,” while someone else explained, “A lot of singers who have higher registers have higher interview voices because it helps with singing and maintaining their range. I.e Michael Jackson.”
The speculation came to a head when Grande herself stepped in to clarify the change.
Commenting on a TikTok clip of the interview, the actor – who will star as the good witch Glinda in the first of a two-part movie adaptation of Wicked in November – revealed the shift was due to “habit (speaking like this for two years) and also vocal health”.
“(I) intentionally change my vocal placement (high/low) often depending on how much singing I’m doing,” she said. “I’ve always done this BYE.”
Grande pays tribute to Brandy and Monica
Earlier this month, Grande revealed a new remix of her track The Boy Is Mine will be released on Friday, featuring US singers Brandy and Monica – who released the original song on which the new track is based in 1998.
The singer, known for hits including Tears Left To Cry, One Last Time, Into You, and Thank U, Next, released her debut album in 2013 and has topped the charts in the UK with her last five consecutive albums.
In March, she officially divorced her ex-husband Dalton Gomez after nearly three years of marriage. Grande is currently dating her Wicked co-star, Ethan Slater.
