A new movie based on the ever-popular Street Fighter video game franchise is set to hit theaters in 2026, according to Sony Pictures.

Confidence despite setback

Sony Pictures has set March 20, 2026, as the date for release for the film, which is being developed and produced by Legendary alongside Capcom, the company behind the game series.

This date came despite the project apparently losing its directors earlier in June. The Hollywood Reporter said that Danny and Michael Philippou had left the project, with scheduling problems at least partly the reason behind that.

But despite that setback, Sony still appears confident that the film will be ready within the next couple of years.

Previous movies

This will be the third time that the Street Fighter franchise has been brought to the big screen. Off the back of the massive success of 1991’s Street Fighter II, a film was released in 1994 with Jean-Claude Van Damme starring as Guile, with Raul Julia – in his final role before his death, aged 45 – playing M Bison. The story centred on a colonel (Van Damme) recruiting a group of elite fighters to free a group of UN delegates that had been kidnapped. The film wasn’t a critical or massive commercial success.

In 2009, another attempt was made with Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, with Kristin Kreuk in the title role and Chris Klein starring as Charlie Nash. The film bombed at the box office.

But, with movie adaptations of video game franchises proving hits in recent times – such as Sonic The Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros Movie – there are high hopes that the latest crack at the Street Fighter franchise will be a success. Will it be? Find out in 2026…
