Pixar sequel Inside Out 2 has become the biggest animated film of all time by global box office takings, according to new figures.
Inside Out 2 has now grossed $1.46 billion globally, taking it past the previous holder, another sequel, Disney’s Frozen 2.
Pixar celebrated this news with a post on X (formerly Twitter) saying: “We’re filled with Joy! Thanks to every fan around the world for making Inside Out 2 the biggest animated movie of all time.” In addition, there was a cartoon of the emotions around a big ‘1’ with a message from director Kelsey Mann and producer Mark Nielsen saying: “We are absolutely blown away by all the love for ‘Inside Out 2’ from around the world. Thank you for joining us on this incredible emotional rollercoaster.”
Disney has also been magnanimous about its film being overtaken. On X, Disney Animation posted: “Everyone at Arendelle and Walt Disney Animation Studios is sending warm hugs to all of @Pixar on their incredible achievement as Inside Out 2 becomes animation’s biggest movie ever.”
In addition to being the biggest animated movie of all time, it was also the fastest animation to break the $1 billion barrier at the box office, doing so just 19 days after its release. Inside Out 2 is now also the 13th biggest grossing film ever, sitting just behind Top Gun: Maverick on the all-time list – for now, as it is still in cinemas around the world and has yet to open in Japan, which it will next week.
Inside Out 2 is also by far the biggest grossing film of 2024 so far, taking roughly double the amount of its closest challenger, Dune 2.
