- Robert Downey Jr to play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday
- Downey Jr admits he likes playing complicated characters
- Brothers Joe and Anthony Russo will direct Avengers: Doomsday

Robert Downey Jr has pulled off a full 180 as the arch villain Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.
After saving the universe as Iron Man he’s now hellbent on destroying it. Talk about a quick change in his career –Downey Jr dies a hero only to come back as the baddest of bad guys. From I am Iron Man to I am Doctor Doom in the blink of an eye (or actually over a few decades-worth of movies).
Talking to fans on X from Marvel Studios HQ, Downey Jr said laconically: “New mask, same task – I like playing complicated characters.”
Iron Man in 2008
Unbelievably, Downey Jr started out in the superhero business back in 2008 as Iron Man – aeons ago. Before he was killed off in Avengers: Endgame in 2019, he’d starred in eight other Marvel movies.
Brothers Joe and Anthony Russo directed Endgame and Infinity Wars, and were not expecting to return to the world of Marvel any time soon.
“When we directed Avengers: Endgame, Joe and I truly believed it was the end of the road for us in the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” Anthony Russo told an audience at Comic Con. “In the time since, through a very special story, Joe and I have come to potentially see a road forward.”
