- Next Scream film will focus on the original central character, Sydney Prescott
- Neve Campbell confirmed the news as she reprises the iconic survivor
- Kevin Williamson – who wrote three of the first four films – is directing the latest film

The seventh instalment of horror franchise Scream is going back to its roots and will centre on the original heroine from the first four films, Sydney Prescott.
Neve Campbell, who has played Sydney since the first film in 1996, confirmed the news on Entertainment Tonight. Speaking to Rachel Smith, Campbell explained that the new film will be in a similar vein to the most recent entry in the Halloween franchise, where Jamie Lee Curtis reprised her role of Laurie Strode, 40 years on from the release of the first film.
“They did pitch the concept to me, and it’s the reason that I jumped on board,” said Campbell. “I love these movies, they are so much fun to be a part of, I’m so grateful for them.”
Campbell’s character was a focus of the first four films, but in the 2022 reboot she was a relatively minor character and didn’t appear in Scream 6 at all – although this was due to a contract dispute.
However, we will have to wait some time to see Campbell back on the big screen as Sydney. Campbell said she hasn’t received a final script yet but expects it to arrive imminently. Production is expected to begin in December.
Kevin Williamson will be in the director’s chair for Scream 7 – he previously wrote the screenplays for Scream, Scream 2 and Scream 4, and was a producer on the other three films in the franchise.
But apart from Campbell, we don’t know who else will be in Scream 7 yet. Courtney Cox has appeared in all six previous films as reporter Gail Weathers, and has previously been reported to be in talks to reprise her role yet again.
