Zoinks! Boomerang, the much-loved home of classic cartoon series such as Scooby-Doo, is to close at the end of September, Warner Bros Discovery has announced.

Folded into Max

Warner Bros Discovery has operated a Boomerang streaming service since 2017, and subscriptions and some of the content will be folded into Max, according to an email sent to subscribers. Existing subscribers will be moved onto Max’s ad-free tier, with no cost changes – which represents a $6 a month saving. Warner Bros said this was “for the foreseeable future” so this may change at some point in the future.

Max already runs some of Boomerang’s content, such as various Scooby-Doo series and Looney Tunes classics. But some favorites will not be making the transition to Max, although which ones have not yet been specified.

The reason for the closure of Boomerang has not been revealed, but some have speculated that the service wasn’t bringing in enough money.

Cult favorite

But it isn’t all bad news for classic cartoon fans – the linear channel will continue to operate on cable and satellite services in the US and in other territories.

Boomerang has been a favorite among children and adults since it debuted as a cable channel in 2000 – having first started life as a block on Cartoon Network – and was known for showing mostly classic Warner Bros and Hanna-Barbera shows. In later years it did also show newer shows and some original content.

Some classic cartoons meanwhile are getting a reboot, such as Regular Show, a Cartoon Network stable in the 2010s, with creator J.G. Quintel on board.
