In sport, some athletes make millions of dollars, while others struggle to make ends meet, even if they are Olympians. One Olympian was facing not being able to pay the rent, until two famous faces stepped in.

Rent plea

Discus star Veronica Fraley posted on X (formerly Twitter) the day before the Olympic Games began in Paris that she couldn’t make her rent. In her post she said: “I compete in the Olympic Games TOMORROW and can’t even pay my rent my school only sent about 75% if my rent while they pay football players (who haven’t won anything) enough to buy new cars and houses.”

But this plea was quickly picked up by rap legend Flavor Flav, who replied: “I gotchu… DM me and I’ll send payment TODAY so you don’t have to worry bout it TOMORROW… and imma be rooting for ya tomorrow LETZ GO!!!”

Flav was quickly followed by Alexis Ohanian, a founder of Reddit and husband of tennis legend Serena Williams, who also made an offer: “C’mon now! I’ll split it with @flavorflav” he said, followed by a screenshot of a Venmo transaction to Farley.

The rent situation arose as, in 2021, the NCAA changed its rules to allow college athletes to earn money in sponsorship deals, followed earlier this year by allowing schools to pay student athlete – but some are paid more than others.

With her rent for the year paid, Fraley posted her thanks on X: “THANK YOU… SO MUCH this makes every difference in the WORLD & I hope to represent team USA well this week.”

Help given

This isn’t the first time Flav has put his hand up to help Olympic athletes with funding this year. Flav has recently signed on to be the “official Hype Man” for the UAS Water Polo Women’s and Men’s National teams at the Olympic Games and beyond, having pledged to use his resources to help them, again after a plea on social media from the women’s team captain, Maggie Steffens.
