- Sony has released details of the PlayStation 5 Pro – including the cost
- PS5 Pro will be released later this year
- Commentators on social media have had their say about how much it costs

Sony has announced when the PlayStation 5 Pro will be released, as well as its cost – and commentators on social media have made their feelings clear about it.
Next evolution
Sony revealed on the PlayStation blog that the PS5 Pro will be available to pre-order from September 26 direct from PlayStation and other retailers from October 10, with its official launch coming on November 7.
On the blog, Hideaki Nishino, CEO Platform Business Group, Sony Interactive Entertainment, announced the next evolution of the PS5. He outlined several key performance features of the console.
For instance, there is an upgraded GPU, with 67% more Compute Units than the regular PS5 and 28% faster memory. This enables up to 45% faster rendering, making gameplay smoother.
In addition, there is advanced ray tracing, that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light.
There is also AI-driven upscaling through PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. This uses a machine-learning based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.
Dismay from gamers
But there has been dismay at the announcement from gamers – especially the cost. The PS5 Pro will retail at $699.99 in the US – even more in some territories – and this has caused consternation.
Some gamers took to X (formerly Twitter) to vent their frustrations. One user said: “$700 for a disc-less console is a no from me dawg. Unless they stop selling games on disc, I’’ stick with the OG PS5.”
Others pointed out that the PS5 Pro package doesn’t even come with a stand for the console – that is extra.
In general, there was incredulity at the price.
This comes just days after Sony pulled the Concord game after it failed to get the expected take-up from gamers.
