  • Trump made the claim about Haitians eating people’s pets in Springfield, Ohio during recent Presidential debate
  • The line has been mocked relentlessly on social media ever since
  • Viral Simpsons edit from classic episode currently has 6.3m views and almost 140,000 likes on X

You were not in the throes of a fever dream, nor were you tripping balls after licking the back of a very suspect looking toad. But ordinarily these would be the two most logical explanations as to why you saw a genuine candidate for the presidency of the United States of America yell “They’re eating dogs…they’re eating the cats, they’re eating the pets of the people that live there.”

So, yeah, that debate the other night was a totally normal one, wasn’t it? Y’know, if a former President ranting about false stories of Haitian immigrants eating cats and dogs in Springfield, Ohio is your thing. I’m saying they’re false, but Trump did say that he had seen it on TV, so who am I to say that it’s not 100% accurate?

Anyway, while Trump was melting down about the alleged domestic pet based dietary needs of the Haitian community in Ohio, the internet was busy at work turning his words into magic.

And while the platform formerly known as Twitter is basically a disinformation filled pit of despair, it can still produce wonders, as evidenced by the sublime work of Fearghas Kelly, who spun Trump’s words into a classic Simpson episode and was granted his wish of going ‘superviral’.

Captioned “I better go superviral for this”, Kelly reworked the former president’s cats and dogs rhetoric into We Put the Spring in Springfield – the closing number of season eight classic Bart After Dark, in which Bart ends up working at the local burlesque house in Springfield.

Needless to say, Fearghas’ wish came true, as the video, at the time of writing, has amassed almost 6.5m views and over 140,000 likes on X in a little over 24 hours.

Insanely, Trump’s cats and dogs rant wasn’t the only “did I just hear that, right?” moment of his debate with Vice-President and fellow presidential hopeful Kamala Harris. Oh no, there were a good few more terrifyingly ludicrous moments.

So, while the world descends further and further into oblivion, let us enjoy Fearghas’ immaculate handiwork another 1,000 times at least before hoping he turns more Trump rants into iconic Simpsons ditties, such as Monorail and Softball.
