- The big budget film with a high-profile cast was savaged by critics and fans alike
- Borderlands will come nowhere close to recouping the cost of its budget
- The film will be released on streaming services soon so viewers can make up their own minds

Borderlands has finally been put out of its misery with the end of its theatrical run, which has seen it flop hugely at the global box office.
Big deficit
While cinema workers will have welcomed the lack of cleaning up after each screening – due to hardly anyone being there – those in the companies that put the money up for it will have been less pleased.
Borderlands has said to have made just $31 million at the global box office – nowhere near close to even recouping the costs of making it, said to be $115 million, according to Variety.
The movie, a big screen version of the popular video game, had a strong cast, including Jack Black, Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis, but that couldn’t save it. Eli Roth was director and also co-wrote the film.
It had been hoped that follow on the heels of other movies based on video game franchises, and the trailer made it look fun, but it wasn’t to be.
Savaged by critics
Critics savaged the film in general. IGN gave it a measly 3/10 and on Rotten Tomatoes is it scoring at 10% currently. Vulture didn’t pull its punches in its review, saying it was a “total catastrophe.”
Now, the film is coming to streaming services, which means subscribers can make up their own mind about it, without having to fork out for a trip to the theater. This means that some money spent on it could be recouped. It isn’t unknown for movies that do poorly at the box office then go on to become cult hits on streaming services. Whether Borderlands becomes one of those remains to be seen.
