It may be 30 years since Keanu Reeves starred in Speed, but the actor still knows the value of going above 50mph as he made his professional racing debut last weekend.

Creditable performance

Reeves, 60, competed in the Toyota GR Cup at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday. Reeves qualified 31st out of 35 entrants. In the race, despite spinning off halfway through the race, he rejoined and finished in 21st place. Reeves was partnering another celebrity, Cody Jones, of the Dude Perfect YouTube series.

The Toyta GR Cup is a spec series designed to provide competitive and affordable racing featuring a mix of professional and amateur drivers.

Reeves’ car was promoting the graphic novel The Book of Elsewhere, which Reeves co-wrote with China Mieville.

The star of the John Wick films – which recently confirmed a fifth instalment of the franchise is in the works – has long been known for his love of motorsports. Back in 2009, he won the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach celebrity race. He also presented a documentary series, Brawn: The Impossible Formula 1 Story in 2023. This told the story of the F1 team that won the driver and constructor titles less than 12 months after being formed.

Anniversary screening

The drive came just ahead of an event to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of the film Speed. Reeves starred in Speed alongside Sandra Bullock, and the pair will be attending a special anniversary screening on October 8. Speed centres on a police officer (Reeves) trying to prevent disaster when a bus is rigged with explosives by a vengeful extortionist that will be triggered if it goes below 50mph.
