John Wick fans know about some of the former hitman’s past, revealed in the four films, but now fans will get to see how he became the man he is in a new anime feature in development.

Fun with the story

Series director Chad Stahelski has confirmed that the anime film being worked on will be a prequel to the live action films and will cover Wick’s time as a hitman – although he didn’t confirm the exact timeframe it will be set it.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Stahelski said that by making an anime film, it gives them scope to have fun with how they tell the story. However, other than saying the movie will be a prequel, Stahelski wouldn’t be drawn on greater plotlines, such as whether it could cover how Wick got to originally retire.

Expanding universe

This is just one of several John Wick-related projects that are in the works at the moment. For instance, there is John Wick: Under the High Table, which will be a TV series that will pick up the story after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4 and promises to combine new and old characters in the John Wick universe. There is also a movie, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, coming too. A spinoff focusing on Caine, played by Donnie Yen, is also in the works.

For those wanting a more immediate Wick fix on the big screen, the movie that started it all is coming back to theaters to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its original release. On November 3 and 6, John Wick will be available to see in select theaters in the US thanks to Lionsgate and Fathom Events.
