Alien: Romulus was one of the hit films of the summer and reinvigorated the legendary sci-fi franchise. Now, 20th Century Studios are looking to capitalise with a sequel already being planned.

Idea being worked on

The film, directed by Fede Alvarez, focused on a crew of miners – rather than Ellen Ripley – and how a mission to loot a spaceship goes horribly wrong when they encounter the facehuggers and later Xenomorphs, which they then have to escape from.

While few characters made it to the end credits, it seems there are enough for a sequel to be made. Steve Asbell, 20th Century Studios president, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that an idea is currently being worked on. In addition, talks are ongoing for Alvarez to return as director.

It is likely the story will focus on Rain and Andy (played by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson respectively), who survived the events of Alien: Romulus, and what happens next to them.

With the sequel currently at the idea stage, there is no indication of when – or if – it would make it to theaters.

New lease of life

This news comes as another classic sci-fi horror franchise – with links to Alien – is also getting a new lease of life. After the success of 2022’s Predator: Prey there will be not one but two Predator movies coming out next year. One will be Predator: Badlands, starring Elle Fanning, while the other is a ‘secret’ film.

Given Alien: Romulus’ retro vibes, it is appropriate that it is getting a retro format release too. As well as debuting on streaming as is standard, the film is also getting a limited release on VHS (kids – ask your parents), which will be out in time for Christmas.
