Kelly MacDonald has been confirmed for a regular role in HBO’s upcoming Lanterns series, based on the iconic DC Green Lantern comic strip.

No-nonsense character

Variety reported that MacDonald had signed up to play Sheriff Kerry. The character is described as a no-nonsense woman devoted to her family and the close-knit town she lives in.

MacDonald joins an increasingly impressive cast for the series, which will run for eight episodes on HBO. Aaron Pierre has been cast as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler will play Hal Jordan.

The Scottish actress has had a long and varied career. MacDonald first came to prominence in the iconic film Trainspotting in 1996. Since then she has appeared in numerous films and TV shows including Brave, No Country for Old Men, Boardwalk Empire and Black Mirror.

Earth-based mystery

The series will follow new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. Lanterns was originally earmarked to show on Max, but will now show on HBO.

Lanterns will also be part of James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, which will launch next summer with the Superman movie, which will star David Corenswet in in the red underpants. Other projects underway in the new DCU involve Batman and Supergirl.

Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King are writing the scripts for the series. All three will also be executive producers, along with James Hawes, who will also be directing the first two episodes of the series.

A launch date for the series hasn’t been announced yet, but it will follow the release of Superman in theaters.
