Following the success of the Super Mario Bros film, Nintendo is looking to another of its franchises to be a success at the theater – the Legend of Zelda.

Within the next five years

A recently released Nintendo financial report contained forward-looking information on ‘visual content’, which included The Legend of Zelda movie, which would be in “202X”.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in a statement that a film based on The Legend of Zelda is being planned and developed.

So we know that a movie is definitely on the cards, and it will be out before the end of this decade.

Live action

Furukawa also revealed was that the Zelda movie, which currently does not have a title, will be live action. This marks it out from the Super Mario Movie, which was animated, in collaboration with Illumination.

More movies to come?

Furukawa added that Nintendo is making direct investments and “are deeply involved in the planning and development of multiple productions.” This indicates that more films could be in the planning stage.

This is perhaps not surprising, given the success of the Super Mario Bros film, which Furukawa said was seen by about 170 million people in theaters.

If this is the case, then it will be music to the ears of Chris Pratt, who voices Mario in the Super Mario Bros film. Earlier this year, Pratt said that he would like to see a Nintendo cinematic universe develop as there are so many iconic franchises in the Japanese company’s roster. “There are decades worth of [games] to explore,” he said.

The Super Mario Bros 2 film is already in the works and is set to be released in 2026. The sequel will be broader in scope to the first film, and will delve deeper in the huge lore of the Super Mario games, according to Keegan-Michael Key, who voices Toad.
