Pope Francis giving a restaurant owner a gift inspired him to carry on after a fire ruined his business.
Bruno Serato owns and operates a restaurant in Anaheim, California. Along with this, he also runs the charity Caterina’s Club, which feeds disadvantaged youth across Orange County.
When his restaurant, the White House, was damaged in a fire, the one thing that was saved in the wreckage was a cross rosary. The holy item was given to him by the late Pope.
“I said, ‘OK, that is the sign from Pope Francis, from God or something,” he said.
“I was like, ‘No way!’” Serato told CBS News.

“That is a gift I wear all the time,” he added, explaining how it powered him onwards in his work and philanthropic work.
The late pope died aged 88 on Easter Monday this year. His last engagements on Earth included meeting the US Vice President JD Vance and condemning the genocide in Gaza.
What else did he say about meeting Pope Francis?
Serato detailed how powerful he found meeting the pontiff back in 2017 and how meaningful he found it.

“Remember, Pope Francis represents Saint Peter, the first apostle of Jesus. That means a 2,000-years-old tradition,” Serato said. “It’s indescribable when you meet him… because I saw the Pope before, but I met him one-on-one. Talked to him, also, and received a gift from him. It was just amazing.”

“I had the privilege to meet him because of what I do,” he added to the outlet.
Who is the new pope?
No new pope has been chosen yet. However, there is currently an ongoing conclave in Rome’s Vatican City. The world’s press has turned its attention to the selection process for the next pontiff.

They recently did their first vote and delivered the black smoke, signifying no pope had been selected.
For billions of those watching the process, it means it continues until someone has been chosen. Typically, it can take weeks to pick a new pontiff.
