- Always Sunny is returning for a new season soon while Abbott’s fourth season premiered last week (October 9th)
- Plot details of the crossover episode are currently unknown
- Rob McElhenney shared a picture on Instagram of the two casts inside the corridors of Abbott
What promises to be the crossover event of 2025 just got a whole lot closer to happening, as Rob McElhenney shared a picture sure to send fans of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Abbott Elementary into a frenzy.
Captioned “School’s out y’all” McElhenney posed with the rest of the Sunny cast in the corridors of Abbott, alongside the distinguished faculty from Philadelphia’s most beloved public school.
The two Philly based shows are set to merge for a monumental crossover episode in the near future, with Sunny returning for season 17 and Abbott recently returning for a fourth season. Abbott’s upcoming new episodes will focus on the neighbourhood around the school becoming gentrified. Sunny’s new episodes, meanwhile, will, well, nothing’s been confirmed yet but let’s just surmise that they’re not as family friendly as their Emmy winning neighbours from the City of Brotherly Love.
Abbott creator and star Quinta Brunson recently revealed how the episode came to be during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
The Golden Globe winner explained, “Something came up online, and he was like, ‘Someone said this seems like a Sunny episode, this seems like an Abbott episode. And then we kind of connected over that. And then we really connected in person, and I just get along with him and his team so well, that we felt like we could actually do this.”
Brunson, who plays the determined and sometimes desperately optimistic second grade teacher Janine Teagues on Abbott, appears in McElhenney’s post, alongside her fellow cast members Jannelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Chris Perfetti and Tyler James Williams. The Abbott cast are stood opposite McElhenney, Danny DeVito, Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson and Glenn Howerton, conjuring up some wild and wonderful scenarios for what could potentially be one of the most memorable crossover episodes of all time.
Brunson had previously teased the crossover episode on her own Instagram last month, sharing a picture of herself with McElhennery and Day, captioned, “Season 4 of Abbott Elementary gets real sunny.”
Abbott returned to screens on ABC last week (October 9th) with the Brunson written episode ‘Back to School’. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is expected back on FX in 2025, for what will be, incredibly, the show’s 17th season. The plot of the crossover episode is not yet known.
