It first hit our screens back in 2001.

But now fans of The Princess Diaries are sure to rejoice – as a third installment of the hit movie franchise is now on the way.

On October 5, Anne Hathaway – who played Princess Mia Thermopolis in the films – confirmed the news with her 35.2 million Instagram followers.

Alongside Julie Andrews as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, Hathaway shared clips of the pair both saying “shut up!”

It was also revealed that Adele Lim is set to direct the third movie.

Lim wrote Disney’s animated feature Raya and the Last Dragon (2021), and made her directorial debut with Lionsgate’s R-rated comedy Joy Ride two years later.

She also wrote the Jon Chu-directed rom com Crazy Rich Asians based on the book by Kevin Kwan.

Arriving onto the big screen almost a quarter of a century ago, the first Princess Diaries film saw Hathaway take on the role of teenager Mia, who learns she is a princess.

It was a breakthrough in her career. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement came along in 2004, just after Hathaway appeared in the film adaptation of Ella Enchanted the same year.

Hathaway to also star in The Devil Wears Prada sequel

It’s been a busy week for Hathaway.

Not only has The Princess Diaries 3 been announced, but the shooting schedule has been revealed for the much-anticipated The Devil Wears Prada sequel.

According to the Film and Television Industry Alliance, the movie is now in the pre-production phase, categorized as a feature film.

While specifics are still being finalized, filming is scheduled to begin on November 30 – though the locations for shooting have yet to be confirmed.

The second film will once again star Hathaway as Andy Sachs, and Meryl Streep will reprise her Oscar-nominated role as the dragon-like fashion editor Miranda Priestly.

Emily Blunt (aka Emily Charltan) and Stanley Tucci (Nigel Kipling) are also set to return.
