While fans flock to see Wicked in theaters across the globe, they have been equally captivated by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s performances on their press tour.

From the infamous ‘holding space’ interview, to, well… discussing the ‘holding space’ interview (how long can one press tour be?!), the pair have had fans in stitches with their emotional antics.

And, apparently, one of those fans is none other than Paul Mescal.

In a chat for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, the Gladiator II star told Grande, 31, “I’m watching you guys on the press tour, and you’re, like, in love with each other…”

But Grande, who plays Glinda in the adaptation of the 2003 Broadway musical, cut him off, and joked, “Insufferable, yes. Horrible. It’s bad. The most annoying.”

‘Cynthia is extraordinary’

Grande then opened up about her friendship with Erivo, 37.

“Oh my goodness, Cynthia Erivo is just extraordinary,” she told Mescal, 28. “She’s extraordinary in this film, she’s extraordinary as a human being. I’ve been a humongous fan of hers for a long time – from the moment I saw her sing at the Oscars.

“I turned to my mom and I just said, ‘…Who? What, how, when?’ And then of course I went down a spiral on YouTube and watched everything she’s ever done that I could find, because I missed out on seeing The Color Purple on Broadway [which Erivo starred in for just over a year from December 2015] – but I saw all the bootlegs and I saved them all.”

Grande continued, “I  was such a massive fan of hers before I got the news that we were doing this together. Just sharing this experience with her and working with her on this has been truly the honor of a lifetime.

“She’s just a once in a lifetime talent, in many lifetimes. She’s truly incredible.”

Mescal seemed taken with Grande’s words, and added that he “couldn’t agree more”.

“The first time I’d ever seen her sing in person was at the Academy Gala, and I was like, ‘What is going on? What is going on?’” he admitted.
