While an erotic thriller might not quite be the Christmas day viewing a lot of us participated in, Babygirl has been met with delight from fans online.

The movie stars Nicole Kidman as a high-flying, married CEO, who gets into a relationship with her much younger intern, played by Harris Dickinson.

The cast also includes Talk to Me’s Sophie Wilde, and Antonio Banderas, who plays Kidman’s character’s husband.

Babygirl, which had its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in August, comes from writer-director Halina Reijn – and Kidman previously revealed how much she enjoys working with female directors.

“That’s what made it so compelling, was being in the hands of Halina, because I knew she wasn’t gonna exploit me,” Kidman told reporters last August. “I mean, however anyone interprets that, I didn’t feel exploited.

“I felt very much a part of it. It’s the story that I wanted to be a part of, that I wanted to tell. And every part of me was committed to that.”

‘Babygirl is absolute freaking cinema!’

And while the adult themes may have shocked some, fans on social media mostly went wild for Kidman’s movie.

“I was LOCKED IN to Babygirl more than any other movie I’ve seen in the theater in 2024,” wrote one via Twitter/X. “Absolute freaking cinema.”

“Yeah, Babygirl is actually the best erotic classic thriller,” another agreed. “Nicole Kidman is incredible, so raw and open and I respect her so much. The movie really pushes the power imbalance and sexuality. The score was also pretty amazing.”

Someone else added, “Saw Babygirl a second time tonight with my roommate and we just spent THREE HOURS STRAIGHT discussing it and all of its complexities.

“Omfg WOW that is hands down one of the best movies I have ever seen in my entire life literally ever. Just so raw and real and daring. I HAVE to go see it AGAIN AND AGAIN to really take it all in. WOW.”

Others were campaigning for Kidman this awards season, and joked, “If you need me I’ll be raising awareness of Nicole Kidman’s performance in Babygirl outside of the Academy Awards members houses from now until the Oscars ceremony.”

‘Babygirl is just silly!’

However, despite the overwhelming majority going wild for the movie, others weren’t so convinced.

“Found BABYGIRL awfully obvious – didn’t learn anything about women that I didn’t already know!” said one. “LAST SUMMER did it better!”

They then joked, “But to its credit it does feature a scene where Harris Dickinson says, ‘that’s an outdated idea of sexuality’ and Antonio Banderas immediately has a panic attack.”

Someone else agreed, “C’mon. It’s just silly. It provides no insight into her behavior other than simplistic pop psychology and stereotypes.

“It didn’t go far enough in terms of exploring the etiology and variation of human sexual behavior. And the corporate intrigue and power dynamics felt tacked on. Meh.”
