A Britney Spears biopic is in the works and the fan casts are everything. The biopic was first announced in August 2024. Universal is distributing the project and Wicked director Jon M. Chu is directing. Marc Platt will produce. The Princess of Pop shared the news on her X account expressing her joy for a “secret project”.

Who is Britney Spears?
Spears is considered to be one of the pop icons of the late 20th and 21st centuries. A teenage Spears rose to fame with her debut single Baby One More Time in 1999. Through the 2000s she continued her reign on the charts with other pop hits like Gimme More and Toxic.
The 43-year-old singer became prominent in the tabloids for her relationships, music, and infamous breakdown in 2007. The Princess of Pop hasn’t produced an album since 2013 but she did release her memoir The Woman In Me in 2023. The memoir will provide the basis for the singer’s upcoming biopic.
As with any biopic about any star, the casting rumors go wild. Actress Millie Bobby Brown recently said she would “love” to play the singer in a biopic, but fans have many ideas of who they’d cast. Here are a few of our favorites for the Britney Spears biopic.
Who should play Britney in the Britney Spears biopic?
Sydney Sweeney
What would a fan cast be if the list didn’t include Sydney Sweeney? Not only is the 27-year-old blonde but she is also at the right age to play Britney. The height of Spears came in her early twenties, an age Sweeney could pull off.
Sweeney is no stranger to biopics, she just recently finished shooting a biopic about former boxer Chrissy Martin. To audiences, she has a lot of sex appeal which bodes well with the image of the singer in the 2000s, especially during the Circus era.
Tate McRae
One of our favorites, Tate McRae is the choice for Britney if you’re considering stage presence and her artistry. Firstly McRae is at the perfect age to play a young Spears at 21. She has proven that she has the same level of dancing ability as Spears. As it stands McRae is more of a performer than a singer and is known for impressive choreography and stage presence.
The It’s Ok I’m Ok singer proves on her latest album So Close To What that she has a similar vocal style to Britney, a somewhat breathy and nasally style. The only problem here is that she has no acting experience, but with a coach, a wig, and contacts she could become Spears.
Reneé Rapp
One of the more overlooked fan casts, but this one is an obsession! Reneé Rapp
proved with her role as Regina George in the recent Mean Girls musical movie that she can sing. Rapp already has a successful music career. The 25-year-old could easily sing one of Britney’s pop hits if her performance on Not My Fault is anything to go by.
Crucial to this role is the ability to portray range, and Rapp has that. In Mean Girls, she played the bully, but she has also shown she has a sweet side in her role in the Sex Lives Of College Girls.
Dove Cameron
Dove Cameron is fan cast often in blonde roles. Having rose to fame on Disney she has lots of acting and singing experience. In The Descendants, she sang multiple songs and had a music career. Cameron’s song Boyfriend mirrors the edgy style of a 2000s Britney, and it would work if she dyed her hair back blonde!
We know that she would excel in the role of a 2000s pop princess!
Millie Bobby Brown
Since Brown has expressed interest in starring in a Britney Biopic before, many fans are all for it. The 21-year-old has been blonde for a while now and does have a small likeness to Britney with blonde hair and dark brown eyes. Although Brown hasn’t been known for her singing (remember the childhood video of her singing Imagine?), she could learn. How many singers learn to sing for musicals?
In 2022, she said during a car ride with Drew Barrymore she would want to star in a Britney Spears biopic.
Her motivation for the role could work in her favor to channel Britney’s voice, her mannerisms, singing, and most importantly, her dancing.
Olivia Holt
Once again, Olivia Holt makes the fan cast list. The reason that she makes the list is because she resembles Britney. Holt hasn’t had many chances to show off her pop music despite being a singer. With that being said, she could easily slip back into singing and training in a Britney style.
Her music has proven its versatility so she could do the same playing Spears. Holt’s acting credits prove her ability to play across an emotional spectrum. In Cloak and Dagger, she can play tough but has plenty of emotional scenes.
Whereas in Cruel Summer she plays the popular girl with trauma, which could work well in portraying Britney after her rise to fame and cruel experience with the tabloids.
Chloe Cherry
This one is a little unhinged, Chloe Cherry is a rogue pick, but an amazing one. Cherry knows what it’s like to wear lots of hats as an actress and model. Her signature lips aside, Cherry is a shock pick which not only could bring publicity to the role but would make it very interesting.
The model doesn’t sing but she has been in high-profile shows, starring as Faye in Euphoria’s second season. Her style is also very alternative and in terms of costumes, it would be believable to see her dressed up in Britney’s provocative 2000s tour outfits. And you know she would pull off the vintage denim look so well.
Elle Fanning
Fanning has been an actress since childhood and is a great pitch for Britney. She is the picture of sweetness and elegance and could easily capture the innocence of Britney pre-fame. Fanning has recently proved she can star in a musically-led biopic. Alongside Timothée Chalamet and Monica Barbaro, she starred in the recent Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown.
The 26-year-old played more of a supporting role, but the girl has acting chops, and could easily mirror Britney. As someone who was a child star, she is used to the celebrity life and the pressure from the tabloids, which Spears also struggled with. Therefore she could use this real-life experience and bring it to the role, something which not all actresses can do since they were not famous as children.
