  • The pop star fired back at the photographer on the event’s black carpet
  • Roan recently drew criticism for cancelling two shows at short notice to rehearse for the VMA’s
  • 26-year-old won the VMA for Best New Artist

Chappell Roan was quick to put down a photographer on the black carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards, last night.

The Pink Pony Club singer, who performed at the ceremony in New York and also scooped the award for Best New Artist, had absolutely no time for a photographer yelling at her to “shut the f**k up”.

Roan, 26, appeared to be having her outfit adjusted as she stood on the black carpet on her way into the event, when the unidentified photographer hurled the abuse at her. Although it is unclear as to what could have prompted them to do so, as Roan was not even interacting with them nor looking in the direction of the photographers at the time of the incident.

Without missing a beat, Roan pointedly responded, “No, you shut the f**k up! Not me, b**ch” as a collective gasp came over the throng of press in attendance.

The 26-year-old did recently receive backlash for cancelling two shows on short notice due to a “scheduling conflict” which she would then use to rehearse for her VMA’s performance. However, despite the ire this decision drew from some fans, Roan’s response last night has been met with widespread popularity and support.

In an interview a few minutes later, Roan clarified that she struggles in situations such as awards shows and red carpets and said the black carpet was “horrifying” and that photographers “don’t get to yell at me”.

Roan, who has achieved massive success in this breakout year with the album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess and her tour with Olivia Rodrigo, also made headlines recently when she called out fans for their “weird stalker” behaviour.
