- Cillian Murphy confirmed to be reprising iconic role of Tommy Shelby
- The Netflix film will focus on the Shelbys during the Second World War
- Original creator and writer has penned the script

By order of the Peaky Blinders… Cillian Murphy will return as Tommy Shelby in Netflix’s forthcoming Peaky Blinders film.
Netflix posted a message and photograph on its official X (formerly Twitter) account that confirmed Murphy’s return. The picture showed a script, simply titled ‘A Peaky Blinders Film’ that also confirmed that Steven Knight, who wrote and created the original TV show, has written the script. Tom Harper, who directed part of the first season of Peaky Blinders, will be directing.
For the fans
In a short statement alongside the announcement, Murphy said: “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me. It is gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This one is for the fans.”
Filming for the movie will start in September in Birmingham – where the original show was set, according to Knight. The film will move on from where the sixth and final season ended and focus on the Shelby family’s fortunes during the Second World War.
The original series ran from 2013 to 2022 and followed the rise of a gang of Birmingham gangsters from 1919 to 1933, including Tommy Shelby being elected to Parliament and later fighting against fascists. It was shown on the BBC in the UK, with Netflix showing it in other territories.
Reprising roles
This is not the first famous role that Murphy, who won an Oscar this year for his portrayal of nuclear scientist Robert Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer, has agreed to reprise recently. It was confirmed last month that he would be appearing in the forthcoming zombie horror film 28 Years Later.
