Star Wars fans rejoice – a new trilogy of movies is definitely in the works. But what the plot of the films will focus on is more unclear.

Plot confusion

Deadline broke the story that the trilogy is on the way, but added that it will be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga, which began way back in 1977 with the first Star Wars film (the fourth in the timeline of the series).

However, this claim has since been disputed, including by The Hollywood Reporter, who cited sources who said that the new films will be focused on new characters instead.

Thus far, neither Disney nor Lucasfilm has commented on the story or moved to clear up the confusion. However, given the secrecy that usually surrounds Star Wars projects, this is no surprise.

But what is certain is that Simon Kinberg has been brought in to develop the new trilogy. Kinberg is no stranger to the Star War universe, having co-created the animated series Star Wars Rebels, which ran from 2014-18. He also worked as a consultant on Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens in 2015.

Kinberg has also worked on various Marvel franchises, including X-Men and producing the first two Deadpool films – he was an exec producer on Deadpool & Wolverine.

Release schedule

Where these films will fit with Disney’s release schedule isn’t clear either. Back in August, Disney announced that three Star Wars films will be released in 2026 and 2027. One of those films will be The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is set to be the first of the three films released.

However, it hasn’t been confirmed what the other two films will be. At the time, New Jedi Order was thought to be another of the three films, but this hasn’t been confirmed. Could one or more of the new trilogy fit into this schedule? We will have to wait for Disney to break its silence.
