- The museum, in Yokohama City in Japan, scheduled to open in 2027
- World’s first museum dedicated to video game art
- Will include exhibits on all aspects of video game art, from character visuals to music.
In the last 40 years, the video game industry has become one of the biggest in the world, with games and characters becoming icons across the world. Now, the first museum dedicated to the art of video games is in development.
Construction has started on a development in Yokohama City in Japan, in the 52nd block of Minato Mirai 21 Central District, the largest in the area, which includes a three-storey museum that will include art from video games, an art garden and an office building. It is scheduled to open in July 2027.
Developers Daiwa House Industry are constructing the museum in a spiral design, reflecting the creativity within video games, according to its press release.
The Game Art Museum will be dedicated to all aspects of video game art – which is now acknowledged as an art form in its own right – including visuals, character designs and soundtracks.
Exhibits in the museum will be curated by Koyo, an affiliate of Koei Tecmo Holdings, best known for games like Dynasty Warriors. It will use CGI technology to provide interactive experiences to visitors to entertain and educate them on the elements that make up video games.
As mentioned, there will be also a 3,000 square meter art garden to provide a quiet space for visitors and will feature seasonal plants. When the sun goes down, a game-like atmosphere will be created through the use of projection mapping.
When the museum is open, it is expected to attract visitors from all over the world and enhance Yokohama as a destination for cultural experiences.
