Are you ready to take your fares on a wild ride? The Crazy Taxi reboot is coming and will be an open-world AAA game, according to those behind it.

Open world AAA

News of the Crazy Taxi reboot first broke surface at The Game Awards in 2023 when Sega announced a raft of new games for established franchises, including Shinobi and Streets of Rage.

Since then, updates have been thin on the ground, other than a brief mention in February that it will be an AAA game by Takaya Segawa, who oversees Sega’s support studio in Sapporo, Japan.

But now producer Kenji Kanno, in an interview translated by Automaton, has revealed much more about the upcoming game, confirming that it will be an open world driving game that will be “massively multiplayer” – so many players can play simultaneously. It will be powered by the Unreal Engine.

Hugely popular

Crazy Taxi was a hugely popular game when it debuted in arcades in 1999. It was released on the Sega Dreamcast in 2000 and sold more than 1 million copies. It was also ported to other consoles later. The idea was simple – get as much money as possible by delivering passengers to their destination as quickly as possible, with bonuses to be earned through performing stunts on the way. It was also noted for its soundtrack, which included artists such as The Offspring.

The game spawned numerous sequels, with Crazy Taxi Tycoon being the most recent, released in 2017.

However, one update we didn’t get from Kanno was any release date. While development seems quite a way down the line, it is evidently some time away from being completed, so it looks likely there will be a 2025 release.
