For fans, the wait already seems like forever, but now there is light at the end of the tunnel as Take-Two Interactive has revealed the release date for Grand Theft Auto VI.

Well, sort of. GTA VI will be released in ‘fall 2025’ according to the game publisher and parent company of Rockstar Games, which develops the GTA series.

The excitement for GTA VI is evident, with streams of the Tom Petty song used in its trailer surging by 37,000%

Big announcement

The announcement was made by Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two as part of the company’s reporting of its results and outlook for 2025. He outlined a positive outlook for the company, saying: “Our outlook reflects a narrowing of Rockstar Games’ previously established window of Calendar 2025 to Fall of Calendar 2025 for Grand Theft Auto VI.

“We are highly confident that Rockstar Games will deliver an unparalleled entertainment experience, and our expectations for the commercial impact of the title continue to increase.”

Fever pitch

The anticipation for GTA VI is already at fever pitch. When Rockstar dropped the first official trailer for the game in December 2023, it broke the record for the most-viewed video game reveal on YouTube within 24 hours.

In it, hints were given about the game. one of the biggest is that players will be able to play as a female character – Lucia. There is also a male protagonist who is, as yet, unofficially named. It is set in Leonida – which is based on Florida – in the present day.

Fans at least now have a firm indication of when the game will drop. There had been fears its release would slip to 2026, as there have been stories of upset among Rockstar staff after a return to office policy was enacted.

However, not all is smooth sailing, as Rockstar developers express dissatisfaction with the return-to-office mandate during GTA VI‘s final development phase
