The long-awaited Deadpool 3 trailer has dropped – and it looks like the move to the MCU hasn’t taken any of the edges off the ‘merc with a mouth’.
The action starts with everyone’s favourite fourth wall-breaker celebrating a birthday as his alter-ego Wade Wilson. While everything seems quiet and to be going well, for once – and he admits he is happy – it was never going to last. And it doesn’t.
There is a knock at the door, and Wade is kidnapped. He wakes up in a mysterious bunker, where he is then shown the world – and other Marvel superheroes – and given a chance to be ‘a hero amongst heroes’.
The self-referential post-modern jokes Deadpool is famous for have also made the jump to Marvel. At one point, Deadpool says: “Your little cinematic universe is about to change forever. I am the Messiah. I am Marvel Jesus!”
Deadpool poking fun at the MCU and some of its recent box office failures shows he hasn’t lost any of his edginess either. We then go into a compilation of action sequences that appear every bit as brutal, bloody and funny as in his earlier outings.
But the most crucial part of the trailer comes right at the end when, lying prone after a battle, a shadow falls over Deadpool. While Deadpool starts to ask for a hand up, there is a familiar sound and the shadow of razor-sharp blades appears. “No, I’m ok thank you very much,” Deadpool shouts as the scene cuts to black as he is about to be attacked.
Quite how and why Deadpool and Wolverine meet, and what happens afterwards, isn’t covered, so you’ll have to wait until July 25 when the film is released in cinemas to find out how that all comes about and whether Deadpool really can save the MCU…
